In Montgomery County: 

Office of the Circuit Court

Retail and Wholesale Businesses

If your new business in Montgomery County involves retail, wholesaling items, or opening a chain store, you will need to obtain a Trader's License from the Office of the Circuit Court Clerk.

Department of Liquor Control

Bars, Restaurants, and Events

If you plan on serving or selling alcoholic beverages in Montgomery County, you must first obtain the proper licenses from the Department of Liquor Control, at 240-777-1999.

Health

Division of Licensure and Regulatory Services

If your new business is a health care facility or medical provider, mobile food operation, restaurant, private school, nursing home, daycare facility, assisted living, or group home, you must secure a license from the Department of Health & Human Services’ Division of Licensure and Regulatory Services

Consumer Protection

Office of Consumer Protection

If your new business involves motor vehicle repairs and/or towing, new home construction, radio/tv/appliance installation and repairs, or secondhand personal property, you will need a license from the Montgomery County Office of Consumer Protection.

 

Department of Permitting Services

Construction/Contracting/Building Trades

If your new business is working as an electrical contractor, installing signs, or another construction related trade you will need a license issued by the Department of Permitting Services (DPS). DPS also issues building permits for residential and commercial issues, electrical, sediment control, and right of way (driveway); conducts zoning review; conducts well and septic review; and handles complaints for zoning and building issues.

In Takoma Park:

Facade Advisory Board

Any changes to the exterior of the building, including signage, must be approved by the Facade Advisory Board at the City of Takoma Park. Contact Ilona Blanchard: 301-891-7205.

Main Street Takoma Facade Improvement Program grants

The Design Committee of Main Street Takoma administers a facade improvement grant program with funds from the State of Maryland Neighborhood Business Works program. Pre-approved projects may be reimbursed up to 50 percent of the cost. Application and guidelines are available on the Main Street Committee page.

Revolving Loan Program

The Economic Restructuring Committee of Main Street Takoma administers a revolving loan program for capital improvement projects with funds from the State of Maryland Community Legacy Program. Loan terms are determined on a case-by-case basis. For more information, check the committee page.
