The Dinky Line

Good Times on The Dinky Line

On Saturday, April 20th from 12:00 noon – 5:00 pm we invite you to walk the former route of the Dinky Line Trolley for sales, drink specials and to play Detective Dinky. Find hidden toy trolleys along the route to get your ticket stamped and enter to win a Shop Takoma Gift Card!

This is a self-guided walk (not a tour) along the former trolley route which ran through the majority of the Takoma commercial district (see Map tab). We are using this event to encourage you to visit local businesses along the route for shopping (check out the deals!), drinks or a scavenger hunt. You choose!

The Dinky Line was a trolley line that ran in the early 20th century and carried Washingtonians to the country getaway of Takoma Park. The Dinky is a nickname used to describe a short railroad line. The Takoma segment ran south on 4th St NW, left on Aspen St, NW to cross under B&O Railroad, to Laurel St, NW to Laurel Ave to Carroll Ave, and finally a right onto Ethan Allen Avenue, Takoma Park. For more info about The Dinky Line and its colorful history, read this Takoma Voice article from May 2000.

The Thousand Incarnations of the Rose

A Festival of American Primitive Guitar

April 13-15, 2018 • Takoma Park, Maryland

The Thousand Incarnations of the Rose, A Festival of American Primitive Guitar. is a 3-day music festival that will take place in Takoma Park and will bring together for the first time more than 25 acoustic fingerstyle guitar and banjo players from every era of the American Primitive/Guitar Soli movement.

Half of the festival performances are open to the public and will be staged at venues in Takoma Park on Friday and Saturday, April 14-15, including Republic, Takoma Bev Co, Carroll Cafe, Allyworld, Busboys and Poets, Rhizome DC and the Takoma Park Gazebo. All Access Festival Passes for the other half of the performances, panel discussions, and movie screenings are ticketed events and presented at the Takoma Park Community Center on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets: www.1000rose.org

What is Primitive Guitar? When Takoma Park native, John Fahey sat down to record “The Takoma Park Pool Hall Blues” for Fonotone Records in 1958 he could not have imagined that he was starting an artistic movement or that generations of players would follow in his footsteps. The term has come to refer to a certain approach to playing the guitar (or banjo) that favors emotion and mood over virtuosity for its own sake It is only fitting that this festival is being staged in Takoma Park, Fahey’s boyhood home, and that 2018 marks the 60th anniversary of his very first recordings.   Tickets and performers info: www.1000rose.org   Event presented by Rhizome DC, the City of Takoma Park and the Old Takoma Business Association, Your Main Street Takoma.
